Position: Mechanic

Status: Regular Full-Time

Reports to: DPS Director

General Description of Duties

Perform maintenance repair tasks involving, but not limited to, all city owned vehicles including Dial-A-Ride Buses, Police Patrol Cars, Board of Public Services and Dept. of Public Services vehicle fleet.   

Duties and responsibilities: 

These include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • Responsible for the operation, coordination, and quality control of a garage.   
  • Have knowledge and demonstrate ability to perform maintenance and repair on various City owned vehicles (diesel and gas engines, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, brakes, tune-ups). 
  • Have knowledge for maintenance and repairs on various small pieces of equipment (i.e. lawn mowers, leaf blowers, chain saws etc.).  
  • To be able to diagnose problems 
  • To be able to conduct fabrications of metal and welding, etc.   
  • Operate various vehicles and equipment required to perform job assignments 
  • Keep written record on daily activities (Dial-A-Ride inspection and/or repair logs for MDOT vehicle maintenance logs etc.). 
  • FTA Dial-A-Ride Bus inspections per MDOT Standards. 
  • Performs and/or oversees (contractors) the overhauling and rebuilding of automobiles, trucks, tractors, pumps, buses and other standard specialized gasoline, diesel equipment. 
  • Oversees the receipt and inspection of new vehicles and equipment for compliance to specifications. 
  • Contact dealers on automobile warranty. 
  • Prepare cost for material and equipment estimates.   

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).   
  • Applicant shall have a valid Class B CDL with an Air Brake Endorsement.   
  • Applicant must have a good attendance record. Demonstrate the ability and desire to learn the necessary skills within the job classification. 
  • Have no physical impairments that would affect the performance of the job 
  • Ability to work overtime. 
  • Qualified and or able to obtain qualifications to perform commercial motor vehicle safety inspections.   
  • Applicant shall provide their own tools to perform duties properly.   
  • Operate various types of equipment (Front end loader, Dump Trucks, etc.) 
  • Knowledge of body and frame construction 

Reporting Relationship and Supervision Received: 

  • The Mechanic reports directly to the DPS Director, BPU Water Superintendent, BPU. Electric Superintendent pending on the vehicles or equipment being serviced.   
  • The Mechanic will be housed at the main garage located at the Dept. of Public Services.  In certain circumstances it may be necessary for the mechanic to perform duties at the Board of Public Utilities, or mobile operations.
