Position: Forester/Groundskeeper

Status: Regular Full-time

Reports to: City Manager

General Description of Duties:

The Forester/ Grounds keeper shall regulate and encourage the preservation, culture and planting of shade and ornamental trees, plants and shrubs that are now growing or may be hereafter growing in the streets, parks buildings, power lines, public highways or boulevards, or any other city property.

Duties and Responsibilities:

An employee in this position will assist the Director of Public Services and Director of BPU in doing any or all of the following essential duties: (These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform.)

  • Determine tree trimming and removal priorities for the City and Board of Public Utilities and establish action plans accordingly.  
  • Prepare bid specs and solicit bids for contracted removals and trimming.
  • Evaluate contracted services when completed to make sure everything was done accordingly.
  • Oversee trimming operations.
  • Determine planting species and locations.
  • Oversee preparation of procurement documents (including the bidding process when appropriate)
  • Inspect nursery stock when received and oversee planting operations.
  • Assist in authorization of permits.
  • Review site plans as required.
  • Provide tree valuations.
  • Professional assistance pertaining to tree care on city owned properties.
  • Attend city meetings as required.
  • Schedule and conduct quarterly "Shade Tree Commission" meetings.
  • Prepare "Tree City USA" application.
  • Conduct "Arbor Day" programs for elementary schools.
  • Provide oversight for all flower beds and landscaping for all City owned beds.
  • Assist in the maintenance of parks, recreational facilities and cemeteries.
  • Become a State of Michigan registered forester within one year of hire.
  • Obtain pesticide certification in category 6 (right of way) management within one year of hire.
  • Proficient in the use of aerial bucket truck, brush chipper, and chain saws.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with electrical wires and utility lines.
  • Knowledge of property line for the City and BPU.
  • Perform other essential tasks as assigned.

Requirements and Training:

  • Four year degree in forestry or related field that qualifies you as a registered forester preferred.
  • Three years of professional forestry experience as an Urban Forester preferred but not required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
