Start or Stop Service

The Hillsdale Board of Public Utilities provides electric, water and wastewater (sewer) services to customers within the City of Hillsdale and surrounding areas. Those wishing to turn on an existing service should contact the Customer Service Department at (517) 437-3387 or visit our office at 45 Monroe Street, Hillsdale, Michigan. In some cases, a service deposit may be required to start service.

NEW CUSTOMERS

Services must be established in the name of the legal occupant(s) of the property. The BPU may refuse to provide service to anyone who has outstanding or delinquent utility accounts with the BPU.

To set up a new account we will need the following information/documentation from the legal occupant of the property:

  • Name(s)
  • Mailing Address
  • Phone Number(s)
  • Date of Birth
  • Social Security Number (SSN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN)
  • Driver’s License or State ID

A service deposit may be required for properties that are not lienable. If a deposit is required, it must be paid before account set up.

The BPU may require new customers to provide a copy of their mortgage or lease agreement. Any service set in the name(s) of a person(s) who becomes deceased is required to be changed to the name of the legal occupant of the property. Documentation is required for services to be changed to the legal occupant of the property.

When applying for service, you may choose to have your bills mailed or emailed to you. You can change your billing preference at any time by contacting Customer Service or submitting an e-Bill Request online.

New customers are automatically signed up for Operation Round-Up. This community outreach program rounds up the customer’s bill to the nearest dollar, with the remaining cents put into a fund to help eligible low-income BPU customers pay their utility bills. For example, if your total charges equal $101.67, you will be billed $102.00 with a contribution of 33 cents. Participation in the program is voluntary and customers can opt out at any time by contacting the utility and asking to be removed from the program.

Utility bills will be issued at intervals of approximately 30 days. To find out the different ways you can pay, please visit the Payment Options page.

NEW CONSTRUCTIONS, DEMOLITIONS, OR SERVICE UPGRADES

New constructions, demolitions, or service upgrades may involve additional steps beyond applying for service. Please contact Customer Service at (517) 437-3387 for more information.

STOPPING SERVICE

The customer is responsible for notifying the BPU as to when services are to be taken out of their name. Each customer shall pay for utility services furnished to their address until notice has been given to the BPU to discontinue service.

The BPU requires notification at least one business day in advance of the date that utilities are to be disconnected or transferred to give us time to process the request and complete a final meter read.

Any questions related to setting up or discontinuing service can be directed to Customer Service by calling (517) 437-3387, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
